Aerial Video Surveillance

For nearly a decade, unmanned aerial systems (UAS) have been used to collect video surveillance for defense and homeland security [1] initiatives. However, without the ability to synchronize video with the collected metadata, the imagery itself is an inaccurate source of information. Sarnoff is a world-class leader in the development of devices and systems for the exploitation of full motion imagery captured by UAVs.

Sarnoff utilizes its deep domain knowledge to offer a full suite of real-time aerial video surveillance capabilities, from stabilization software that turns shaky video into clear imagery to large-area visualization and video processing. We offer technologies that mosaic successive still images to create a comprehensive, panoramic field of view. Our real-time geo-registration capabilities use reference imagery to improve accuracy, provide situational awareness and add geographical context by assigning coordinates to every pixel. Other capabilities include moving object detection, tracking and classification — sensing motion, recognizing or “fingerprinting” [2] the moving object and following it over large areas.

Expertise with video surveillance enables us to bring real-world solutions and tangible results to the defense industry, including products such as TerraSight [3]. Sarnoff utilizes an integrated approach to UAV video — combining sensors, processing devices and communication technology [4] to enhance application areas, such as: video fingerprinting, object detection and identification, moving vehicle tracking and 3D visualization.
