Multi-Modal Biometrics

Identity verification is a critical necessity — it offers us access to everything from financial transactions to travel. As technology evolves, biometric identification meets an increasing demand for a failsafe method of verification. Characteristics such as fingerprints, eye retinas and irises, facial patterns, and gait can provide important information about a person, from their identity and physical condition to the intent and context of their movement. Sarnoff uses its advanced sensing technology [1] to meet the need for biometric and multi-modal biometric systems.

Sarnoff has world-leading capabilities in sensing, analysis and real-time processing that can stand-alone or be integrated into multi-modal biometric solutions. Our multi-modal sensing and analysis expertise extends from particle collection [2] to leading 2D and 3D video methodologies that map, track, evaluate and fingerprint. Sarnoff has unique iris capturing capabilities [3], able to capture images at a distance while the subject is moving.

Biometric solutions have a number of applications that meet the demanding need for increased security [4]. Critical facilities such as airports or government headquarters and embassies use biometrics to control access and keep buildings secure. Sarnoff technologies allow for standoff biometrics, which reduce constraints on users and enable efficient throughput, thus eliminating chokepoints. Multi-modal biometrics can be applied to perimeter security — monitoring suspicious activities and confirming identities. It can also be used for identity management. Several different characteristics can be captured to build a multilayer identification database, making it significantly easier to locate a person of interest based on their specific attributes.
