Sarnoff’s legacy in medical and diagnostic devices and technology includes pioneering work in the scanning electron microscope in the 1950’s and the development of the world’s first disposable hearing aid in 2000. Today, our research also includes medical vision technology [1] focused on early detection of eye disease as well as sensory advancements that monitor human vital signs [2] from within the ear.
Sarnoff directs its medical expertise in two broad areas: sensors and imaging. Our extensive experience in custom ICs [3], miniaturization and wireless technology allows us to work in the field of non-invasive monitoring of vital signs. Our innovative in-ear platform monitors basic vital signs (heart rate, body temperature) and has potential to also measure blood pressure, activity/inclination and electrical activity in the brain and facial muscles (EEG/EMG/EOG).
The medical solutions developed and advanced at Sarnoff create significant opportunities in several fields. Our vital signs monitoring technology lends itself to medical advancements for sleep wellness, sports medicine and home patient monitoring [4]. Other possible applications include military and government use — monitoring solider fatigue and health to determine battle readiness.
