High Power Lasers

Based on deep expertise in advanced optoelectronic device design and high quality crystal growth, Sarnoff has a historic record of developing state-of-the-art high power semiconductor laser emitters. Record power levels have been reported over a broad range of wavelengths and material systems, including GaAs, InP, and GaSb.

Development of the broadened waveguide laser led to a number of demonstrated technological advances including high power pump lasers for Raman amplification in telecommunication systems. Advances in high power, high brightness lasers continue at Sarnoff based on optimizing low-loss material and developing advanced optical waveguide technology.

The applications of Sarnoff’s high-power laser technology span many industrial and government specific needs and include pump sources for solid-state or semiconductor lasers, direct-semiconductor-emitting directed energy sources (which promise significant savings in system size, weight and power consumption), directed energy applications such as medical ablation and industrial machining, even the promise of enabling fusion energy.
