Robotics

Sarnoff is renowned for its work with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)—providing state-of-the-art image processing systems that enhance UAV imagery to save lives. We combine this expertise with our work in the automotive industry to offer advanced solutions for unmanned ground vehicles, taking on projects with various government agencies such as the DARPA Urban Challenge. Situational awareness, visual navigation and safe operations are critical necessities for autonomous maneuvering—in both government and commercial applications—and Sarnoff’s robotics technology makes it possible.

Unmanned robotics is poised to bring a new level of safety to the battlefield. Sarnoff offers advanced situational awareness and visual navigation capabilities that keep soldiers out of harm’s way. Sarnoff’s visual navigation provides robust autonomous robots with accurate navigation, following and retro-traverse capabilities. We offer road awareness technologies for obstacle detection and classification, which enable an unmanned robot to safely navigate various terrains in dynamic and cluttered environments. Our real-time computer vision systems allow autonomous vehicles to complete dangerous tasks while maintaining complete awareness of their location and the objects or people surrounding them.

Advancements in autonomous ground vehicles have enabled a number of applications, in both the government and commercial markets. Robotic vehicles support our military forces in special operations that can be extremely dangerous. The versatility of Sarnoff’s technology allows these vehicles to sense, map, plan and move in 3D spaces—navigating pathways, understanding environments through detection of threats, and mapping of uncharted areas. They can also geo-locate targets or detect and find people. In the commercial sector, robotic vehicles assist first responders in emergency situations—exploring potentially hazardous areas without endangering human life. Additionally, these capabilities enable driver assist and lay the groundwork for autonomy in the automotive sector.
